JJLMF representatives bring dynamic, interactive presentations to schools and other organizations, sharing a message of compassion and awareness with thousands of students, parents, school personnel and others each year.
The session is designed to help participants do the following:
|
|
• |
Recognize signs and symptoms of depression (unipolar and bipolar) in themselves or
others. |
|
• |
Understand the significance of relationships, including the importance of good listening
skills. |
• |
Begin to replace stigmas and myths with understanding and compassion. |
Each session opens with a brief introduction to the foundation, outlining our history and mission. The presenters then cover several key areas:
WHAT IS DEPRESSION AND WHO DOES IT AFFECT?
We use simple statistics to illustrate the prevalence of depression among young people and the general population. In this segment, we also explore the relationship between depression and suicide.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION AND MANIA
Participants help generate concrete examples of depression and mania in students their own age. For example, rather than simply being told that depression can be characterized by changes in sleeping habits, participants discuss what “too much” or “too little” sleep might look like in themselves and their friends.
LISTENING SKILLS
Through role play examples, the presenters demonstrate effective and not-so-effective responses to signs of depression in a friend. Participants are encouraged to point out what works and does not work in each situation.
Since 1996, JJLMF has reached more than 25,000 students, educators, parents and probation officers, with presentations at public, private and alternative high schools, colleges and professional organizations. GO TO LIST OF SCHOOLS
